Construction to link Brasilia to sites of the Federal District began in 1992, and its first sections started operating in 1999, but because of a backlog of work, the metro was not opened at its originally-scheduled date and time (21 April 1994 at 17:00). Work was finally finished in the beginning of 2001.
The Brasilia Metro system operates every day from Monday to Saturday from 6:00 am to 23:30 pm, Sunday and holidays from 7:00 to 19:00. The frequency of the metro is 3 to 22 minutes depending on the season, the day and the schedule. In peak hours, the frequency is 2 to 8 minutes.
